‘To’ and
‘for’ are two prepositions that usually cause a lot of problems to you all.
Let’s take a look at them in detail to solve your doubts.
TO
There are
many uses of ‘to’, but here we are going to see only those which generally cause
you problems. We use ‘to’…
a) Before a
verb to show that it is the infinitive.
To be or not to be – that is the
question.
b) After
some verbs (sorry, you need to study them) when the action in the infinitive
follows it. Here you can see a list of verbs followed by ‘to’ (you can also see
verbs followed by an infinitive).
Sorry, I forgot to tell you.
c) After
some adjectives.
She was afraid to do it.
d) After
some nouns.
Could you tell me the way to the
museum, please?
e) After
question words.
I don’t know what to do.
f) To
express use or purpose.
I want to go there to buy some
food.
g) To show
who receives something or who experiences an action.
I gave my English book to
Thomas.
h) Remember,
‘to’ is the preposition we use when we show direction:
She’s going to the beach.
They travel to many places every
year.
FOR
a) To
introduce the person/people receiving something (compare with ‘g’ in the
previous section).
I have a message for Helen.
b) Showing
purpose.
There are some flats for sale in
my building.
c) Because
of or as a result of something.
She doesn’t do sport for
different reasons.
d) To show
an amount of time or distance.
She’s lived here for ten years.
e) On the
occasion of or at the time of.
What did they buy for his
birthday?
g) To help
someone.
What can I do for you?
I encourage
you to leave a comment and practise the different uses of ‘to’ and ‘for’.
For Christmas, I’m going to buy a lot of presents to my family
ReplyDeleteThis happened a few years ago when I was eating at home. Suddenly, a piece of steak got stuck in my windpipe. I was frightened and scared because I thought I was gioing to die.
ReplyDeleteMy husband was sitting next to me, and then he helped me. Thanks for his help I could breath. But now I´m scared for eating meat.
Hi Mari Paz! It is 'Thanks to his help' because it is as a result or due to; and it "I'm scared of eating."
DeleteYesterday, while I was driving to Santander because I was an appointment with the doctor for my allergy. Suddenly, I saw a car crash on the motorway. three cars collided among them. I was really frightened, but I was able to avoid the accident. After that, I stopped my car to call an ambulance for them.
ReplyDeleteDori
Hi Dori! You 'had' an appointment (not 'was') and the cars collided, but it is not necessary to say 'among them'.
DeleteThanks for your comment!

ReplyDeleteWhen I was 10 years old I saw a thing that I¨ll never forget. My friend and I was coming back from school and we were talking and laughing our personal things, when suddenly we saw a lot of people near the road. We walked towards there and we saw a little girl lied on the road. She had been run over by a car. The ambulance was late and a days later we knew she had died. I¨ll never forget that image to my mind. Nobody is prepared for a thing like that.
Hi Domi! Be careful with concordance: "My friend and I WERE coming back". You saw a little girl "lying", not "lied". Pay attention to the indefinite article 'a': it can't be used with the plural, so we say "some days later". And you can't "forget an image to your mind". Maybe you can't erase it from your mind.
DeleteThere is also a preposition missing, can you see where? Please, try!

DeleteIt was at night and I was working. I was going to an appartment to carry three blankets for some guests. Suddenly, other guests crossed the garden towards me, so I was scared and I started to run. The guests run behind me and, although I was screaming, nobody heard me. When they caught me, the guests said to me that they thought I was stealing. The guests apologized to me for the confusion but I was really annoyed and frightened. I've never been so afraid!
ReplyDeleteHi there! Pay attention to the spelling of 'apartment'. Well done!
